Nestled in the vibrant coastal city of Valparaíso, Chile, an independently arranged Residency program offers creators an inspiring opportunity to develop their craft in one of South America's most colorful and culturally rich locales. Known for its steep hills adorned with brightly painted houses, cobblestone streets, and world-famous street art, Valparaíso serves as both a muse and a canvas for artistic exploration.
In the summer of 2023, Taos artists; Peter Walker and Lorenzo Lopez completed a two-month artist in residency in a rented studio/residence overlooking the Pacific Ocean. They immersed themselves in the city’s bohemian energy, drawing inspiration from its maritime heritage, multicultural history, and the dynamic interplay between the modern and the ancient.
Strolls through the ValparaÍso neighborhoods filled with street art and visits to cultural institutions such as Pablo Neruda’s La Sebastiana house-museum further enriched their graphic novel inspiration. By the end of two months the team had produced a 50 page pilot episode draft ready for inking and coloring. There are 12 more episodes to go in the series.
